Assessing social efficiency of some tourism investment projects at Chan May - Lang Co economic zone
Abstract
In the current context that there are more and more foreign and domestic tourism
projects has invested into Vietnam. Many of them have provided local destination
with economic growth, culture and society development. However, there are also a
noticeable number of unsuccessful projects that damage the local community and
waste natural resources as well as investing capital. The insufficient awareness about
the importance of evaluating social effects to the local residents from the investors
and State management agencies is one the main cause of unsuccessful projects. This
research is conducted in the purpose of assessing social impacts of some tourism
investment projects at Chan May- Lang Co economic zone toward the local
community and investigating the current satisfaction level of local residents in the
studied area.
The research has begun from October 2013 to December 2013 in Thua Thien Hue
Province. The literature review, related theories and previous researches proposed
different scale of measurement. However, because of the distinct characteristics of
dissimilar tourism destinations in economic, cultural, social aspects, there is not a
common model for all community satisfaction assessments. The items of this research
were formerly derived from a comprehensive and collective review of premise works.
Finally, 6 factors used to evaluate residents’ satisfaction on tourism impacts were
chosen namely income, employment, infrastructure, public service, environment, and
socio-cultural.
After the interviews, the scale of the study was adjusted to be appropriate with the context
and objectives of the research to design questionnaire for data collecting stage.
There were 200 respondents collected from different locales within Chan May – Lang
Co economic zone. The results analyzed from SPSS software and the final results
come up with one factor of social impact have positive relationship with local

community satisfaction. It shows that the current social efficiency of tourism projects
at the economic zone is not quite high.
Although there are many limitations and difficulties when conducting the study, this
research is suggested with some practical implications and recommendations in order
to improve the tourism investment projects as well as the standard of living of the host
community.
