Abstract
This research was studied to investigate the organizational factors influencing
willingness to work longer – a study on university lecturers in Ho Chi Minh city, and in
which way these relationships are mediated by intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.
Questionnaire (N=295) with 189 directly survey questionnaires and 106 online survey
questionnaires were set out to explore these relationships and being analyzed by using
SPSS and AMOS.
Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) showed that challenging job content had
positive relationships with willingness to work longer. Moreover, Bootstrapping test
determined that the relationship between challenging job content and willingness to work
longer completely is mediated by intrinsic motivation. On the other hand, extrinsic
motivation was not related to willingness to work longer. The results suggest that
organizations should improve the content of the job for qualified lecturers, by increasing
autonomy, skill variety and challenge to raise the spirit about willingness to work longer.
Additionally, organizations should increase opportunities for promotion and reward to
stimulate extrinsic motivation of qualified lecturers.
