Communication is inherently a key for people to exchange information and knowledge. It is especially the case in the current era of globalization, when communication is no longer encapsulated within a group, a community, or a nation, but has expanded between different groups, communities, and cultures. This has sparked contemporary linguists’ interest in studying the similarities and the differences between different languages to facilitate various practical acts (e.g. teaching, learning, translation, etc.). Analyzing the literature, this thesis focuses on understanding how tag questions (TQs) in English be interpreted through the prism of the Attitude and Graduation of Appraisal Theory, which was set by Martin and White (2005); then, based on the analysis, some proper Vietnamese translations will be recommended. From that, the researcher finds out the similarities in terms of function and word choices in the proposition, as well as the differences in structure and meaning of TQ between the two languages; thereby contributing to the translating implications, and the solutions to overcome obstacles in social communication. This study may serve as the basis for further research in sociolinguistics and second language acquisition.en_US
