Evaluation of antibacterial activity of Vietnam's caesalpinia sappan linn
Abstract
Ethanol extract of bark of Caesalpiniasappan Linn was examined for its antibacterial activity against Staphyloccocusaureus (S.aureus), Escherichia coli (E.coli)and Salmonella typhi (S.typhi). The assay was carried out by disc diffusion method. Staphyloccocusaureus was the most susceptible strain to the extract, followed by Salmonella Typhi while Ecoli was resistant to the tested plant. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test which was done by broth dilution method resulted in the ability to inhibit the survival of S.aureus and S.typhi at 1.2 mg/mL and 2.2 mg/mL, respectively, of plant extract. The phytochemical analysis of tested plant showed the presence of tannin, glycoside, carbohydrate, protein, steroid, saponin but the absence of alkaloid. The result of the present study illustrated that CaesalpiniasappanLinn can inhibit the development of S.aureus, S.typhi which can be contributed to healthcare service for producing alternative forms of antibacterial drugs.
