In this study, calcium bentonite obtained from Lam Dong (Vietnam) was treated by hydrochloric acid in an attempt to improve its adsorption capacity in biodiesel purification. The acid treatment is found to enhance the adsorption capacity of bentonite by increasing the specific surface area (S) and specific pore volume (V) without disturbing the layered crystal structure of bentonite which is confirmed by infrared spectroscopy. The acid-activated bentonite at concentration of 5% (w/w) was then used for purification of biodiesel. The glycerol content and the flash point of the product mixture shows that Lam Dong bentonite with acid treatment can be used as an effective adsorbent for biodiesel purification. Key words: Acid activation, bentonite, adsorption capacity, biodiesel purification.en_US
