Beta-carotene, the major carotenoid accumulated in Dunaliella, is a valuable compound, in high demand as a natural food coloring agent, provitaminA, additive to cosmetics, and health food. Dunaliella salina is considered as one of the best commercial source of natural β-carotene among all organisms in the world. Hence, the aim of this study was to identify new local strains of Dunaliella salina for contributing to gene conservation of algae in Vietnam by using ITS marker(ITS1+ 5.8S+ ITS2= approximately 750bp)as well as looking for different strains of Dunaliella in Vietnam for beta-carotene, carbohydrate, lipids and protein production for the food, aquaculture and biofuel industries. The result revealed that 8 isolates out of 23 isolates are Dunaliella salina, 12 other strains are Dunaliella viridis and 1 strain is Dunaliella tertiolecta. This result confirmed the ubiquitous nature of Dunaliella which allows future researches on beta-carotene to be conducted more easily in Viet Nam.
