Electrocardiogram (ECG) has been established as one of most useful diagnostic tool in medical and is a critical in the management of various condition of heart. The motivation behind the project was the need for a small, portable and ultra-low power wireless ECG recording system that is built from commercially available electronic components. There are many implementations of portable ECG monitoring devices. However, most of them were designed using special application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) or custom built integrated circuits. These are either never commercialized or are far too expensive to be used in academic researches. This thesis work aims to help support the experiments by providing a necessary tool and lowering the research expenses. The thesis starts with the specifications that point out the most important respects of the hardware, firmware and software design. In the forth-coming chapters the building elements are introduced, and the choice of microcontroller and wireless transceiver chips are discussed by high- lighting their features that make them suitable for the purpose. The main parts of the project are hardware, firmware and software design. Both the designed schematic and layout are described, along with the significant parts of the software. Code snippets are provided to exhibit the techniques that take advantage of the capabilities of the ultra-low power chip architecture. Finally, tests and measurements that were carried out to benchmark the device are presented, to show how the whole system performs in the real, “noisy” environment.en_US
