Calcium sulfate (CS), especially α-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (α-HH) has been used specialized in clinical as an important implant due to its bone regeneration properties. Throughout years, many α-HH synthesis methods have been proposed. In recent years, the salt method showed some potentials in the synthesis of α-HH because of its simple materials as no need in equipment investment. However, the synthesis of medical grade α-HH that can be applied in human body using this method has not been cover well. Therefore, in this experiment, α-HH was manufactured from DH by the salt method at high temperature and pressure. The characteristic of the synthetic powder was carried out using XRD and FTIR, which result in high HH and a small amount of DH. Thermal analysis TGA’s calculated resulted in high α-HH purity in samples, which is 98.62% for α-HH 1, 97.10% for α-HH 2 and 99.59% for α-HH 3. The SEM image of the α-HH showed prismatic shape with sharp edges, fitting the characteristic of α-HH. The measurement of crystals showed an average length of 20.96 ± 8.83 µm and 1.30 ± 0.71 µm of average diameter. Cytotoxicity test was carried out with different concentration of synthetic powder in medium at 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%. The result later indicated that α-HH had no toxicity to the culture cells, indicated that α-HH had good biocompatibility.en_US
