Real -time and non-contact pulse rate measuring appication on anroid
Abstract
Pulse rate is one of the most commonly measured vital signs, and provides the user
with important feedback on their current state of health. In the past, it has been necessary
to have direct contact to the skin in order to measure patient’s pulse rate. With the
improvement of Biomedical Image Processing techniques, it is now possible to extract
accurate pulse rate from a distance. The aim of this project is developing a real-time and
non-contact pulse rate measuring application on Android platform. To achieve that, a Sony
Z2 Smartphone powered by Android 4.4.4 were used to obtain experimental result. The
application runs on the phone extracting signal from the face of the patient and analyzing
it by applying Fast Fourier Transform. After converting it from time-domain, the pulse rate
is computed by detecting the highest peak in the frequency-domain of the signal. The
application is quite accurate for non-motion and good light conditions measurement. For
further improvement, a tracking motion can be applied for convenient using and accurate
result. Also more advanced algorithms can be applied to acquiring better signal.
