Urbanization change in Ho Chi Minh city from 1990 to 2022 detecting using satellite imagery
Abstract
After the Liberation day on the 30th April 1975, for three decades, Ho Chi Minh city has been
through an urbanization process splitted into two phases. From 1976-1985, the city focused on
post-war recovery, the infrastructure of the city was consolidated, and urbanization was low in
this phase. After 1986, with the assistance of Russia, Ho Chi Minh city became a huge
economic center, attracting an enormous number of immigrants for jobs and residence.
Nowaday, Ho Chi Minh city has the top urbanization rate in Vietnam. Beside bringing
economic growth, creating a premise for improving people's quality of life and developing the
country, urbanization has left bad influences on the city infrastructure and environment.
Against that backdrop, urbanization management became important. Since the 1980s, remote
sensing applications have been very popular in urban planning. It has been proved that a remote
sensing dataset has more information of earth surface than usual urban map. Presently, remote
sensing technology has developed in sensors, laser scanning data mining and advanced image
processing, it is more widely used in urban area management.
Being the very first step in the process of urbanization management and finding solutions for
the effect of it, this study goal is to detect the change of built up area covered in Ho Chi Minh
city from the 1900s to now, using remote sensing technology and machine learning algorithms.
