dc.description.abstract | Conjunction is one of the important cohesive devices that function as clue words in
realizing logical-semantic relations between text segments (Halliday & Matthiessen,
2004). By virtue of that, it helps readers know what to expect at certain steps of the
discourse and follow the text flow easier. Despite its importance, the studies of
conjunctions in L2 writing are quite rare in Vietnamese context. In hope of
contributing to the diversity of the existing knowledge, this research aims at analyzing
the use of conjunctions in non-native English argumentative essays composed by
Vietnamese undergraduates. The focus is on the appropriateness of the uses in terms
of logical-semantic relation, which is supported by both quantitative and qualitative
evidence from text analysis and survey. The system of CONJUNCTION developed by
Halliday & Mathiessen (2004) is adopted as the theoretical framework for
investigation. The results indicated that students misused certain types of
conjunctions; the deviations can be attributed to some factors: (1) unawareness of
semantic restrictions, (2) overestimate the function of the linking device. Assumptions
of students about conjunctions are also contrary to their actual applications of the
devices to some extent, which implies a misjudgement in the understanding of
students about conjunctions | en_US |
