Proposed business model for an english center in poor rural area : Case study of Chau Pha district
Abstract
With the purpose of proposing a business model for English center in rural areas, this
study used the case of Chau Pha to investigate the situation of learning and teaching English in
this location. The model of Lean Canvas by Ash Maurya and social enterprise model was used to
be theoretical framework for the research. This study was conducted in five stages. The first
stage was the interviews with 34 young people in Chau Pha to examine the demand of learning
English. The second stage was the interviews with 10 parents to probe the parents‟ perspective
about learning English of their children and also to triangulate the problem. The third stage was
the interviews with two English teachers in Chau Pha to have a holistic picture about teaching
and learning English in Chau Pha. These interviews were conducted using qualitative
methodology. After data were collected and analyzed, a business model named English Remote
Learning Center was design based on the Lean Canvas model, social enterprise model, and data
collected from interviews. Next, the model was reviewed and commented by experts who are Dr
Nguyen Kiem Than, Mr Nguyen Thanh Minh, Mr. Hoang Huu Phuoc, and Ms Nguyen Thi
Thom.
In conclusion, the model was suggested to be applied in poor rural areas to give equal
opportunity for everyone to learn English and have a better life. At the end of the thesis,
limitations of the study and recommendation for the further study were presented.
