Effects of english proficiency on student academic performance at International University
Abstract
The research is conducted to identify the effects of English proficiency on IU
student academic performance which is calculated by General Point Average (GPA). The
result of this research to find out those effects and the way they affect to academic
performances. Since, IU has used English as a primary language in educational
renovation and student academic performance has become very important effort of IU.
From sample of 287 students who take part in questionnaire and 2 respondents
in in-depth interview. The SPSS testing has proved that the sample could be represented
for population of IU students. And findings reveal the relationship between four English
skills and Academic performances of IU students. However, it is shown that English
skills and GPA of students at IU are not high as expected when student do not agree that
their English is not proficient and GPA is just around 65 to 80.
Therefore, from those findings the research gives some recommendations to
improve the effort of students in terms of English proficiency and GPA. As known which
Speaking Skill has highest impact on GPA, English Department should be in charge to
have better teaching program to increase the quality of English program as well as
improve educational quality of IU. Moreover, further findings relating two TeamWorking Skill and Self-Study Skill could support school and IU students in improving
academic performance.
