Determinants of inventory holdings in manufacturing companies - A case study of Ho Chi Minh stock exchange
Abstract
The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate the determinants that affect
the inventory holdings within manufacturing companies that are listed on Ho Chi Minh
Stock Exchange (HOSE). This paper focuses on the impacts of four firm‟s characteristics,
including Retained Earnings, Leverage, Firm Size, Sales, and the impact of Vietnam Real
Estate market on the firms‟ inventory holdings. The sample of 106 companies with the
information was collected from firms‟ financial statements in the period of 2009-2013 for
the financial factors and from Savills companies for the index of Real Estate market.
The outcome of the study shows that all factors that have been examined have
the relationships to the firms‟ inventory holdings. However, because the data was
collected on HOSE only, it would be the limitations of this study to suggest the results to
the whole framework of Vietnam. Additionally, there still have not had the official index
for Vietnam real estate market. This research employed the Savills Property Price Index
(SPPI), which is suggested by a real estate companies – Savills. Thus, it may not
absolutely reflect the impacts of real estate market on inventory holdings in those
manufacturing companies. Therefore, it is advised for further researches about this thesis
to collect the official index for the real estate market in case it is available in the future.
