Antecedents of cheating behavior among Vietnamese university students
Abstract
Purpose
This research study is carried out in order to aim towards two purposes. The first purpose is to find out the factors that affect a student’s cheating behaviors. In this case, there are 5 factors: Fear of Failure, Study Motivation, Regular Study Behavior, Enjoyment and Effort. Secondly, the study aims to analyze those mentioned factors and understand how they impacts on cheating behaviors among university or college students.
Design/methodology/approach
The survey of this research study has been distributed to 387 different university or college students. This sample size of 387 was inputted for further data analysis procedure. The study applies quantitative research method and regression analysis for investigating into the data.
Findings
As a result, according to the final equation, cheating behaviors among students are under the impacts of both of the Fear of Failure and Effort. The research outcome shows that Fear of Failure existing within an individual has a positive correlation with cheating behavior of that person. Additionally, students that have stronger effort to study will be less likely to commit to cheating behavior.
Research limitations
Regarding limitation, the study’s sampling is not representative for all students in Vietnam, thus the result cannot be generalized. Future research needs to conduct with representative sampling so as for the result to be generalized for all Vietnamese students.
Practical implications
From the results of the study, academic institutions can have a broader view of how frequent students in Vietnam commit to cheating in examinations and consider strategies to motivate students’ efforts to study or prohibit cheating actions.
