Estimating regional INW ARD FDI spillovers in Viet Nam manufacturing firms - Characteristics
Abstract
This thesis is conducted with the aim to test how FDI presence influences the productivity of Vietnam manufacturing companies. A firm-level panel dataset of 87,195 Vietnamese firms across the nation, covering all relevant detailed information from 2011-2015, is used in this thesis. The results indicate that there is positive intra-FDI spillover in the North of Vietnam but the effect is insignificant in the Central, South and Mekong River Delta. The thesis also finds that domestically owned firms in Vietnam significantly suffer from FDI presence, such effect is less severe for joint venture firms. In addition, it is also suggested that in the case of Vietnam firms, low technology gap can increase the chance of spillover occurrence. According to the result, financial characteristic such as Liquidity has positive relationship with firms’ productivity, Debt, however does not significantly affect firms’ productivity.
