Determinants of capital structure - A comparison among industrials, consumer discretionary, and materials sectors in HOSE
Abstract
The capital structure is considered as the most significant elements of companies when they want to develop and expand its business. An effective capital structure would help companies to operate its business effectively and efficiently. Companies that want to raise its capital for future projects and investments of their businesses have to make decision between equity financing, debt financing, and its internal sources. Leverage is usually the choice of companies because they can use the interest tax shield to acquire reduction of the cost of debt. Therefore, understand clearly about the capital structure, especially about the leverage and its determinants are really necessary for conclusion about the businesses of companies.
This study chooses data in five years (from 2013 to 2018) of the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange (HOSE) to analyze and give an overview about the capital structure of listed companies in the Ho Chi Minh City. To be specific, the data are collected from three sectors that are the Consumer Discretionary, the Industrials, and the Materials. The results from those three sectors would be used to compare and clarify the difference between capital structures of each specific sector. After applying the sampling technique, there are 85 listed companies from those three sectors being the sample to analyze in this study.
The techniques that this study applies to analyze data is the Descriptive statistic, the Regression model, and the Hypothesis testing. The Descriptive statistic is used to get overview about the scope of variables and support to make a comparison between the financial data of three sectors. The Regression model is used to build three equations for three sectors and find how each capital structure are affected by each independent variable. The Hypothesis testing would give a comparison between the results of previous researches from different markets and the results of listed companies in the HOSE.
