dc.description.abstract | This study investigates how dimensions of social capital including number of intraorganizational
ties, trust and tie strength influence resource exchange and combination, how
resource exchange and combination then has impacts on organizational performance namely
growth and innovation performance and how growth finally affects innovation performance.
According to previous literature of social capital, resource exchange and combination,
organizational performance, this study proposes six hypotheses tested by applying structural
equation modeling (SEM). A sample, using convenience sampling and chain sampling method,
without considering firm size and industry, received with 348 responses was collected from
various small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam. The
outcomes indicate that all dimensions of social capital (i.e. number of intra-organizational ties,
trust, tie strength) positively relate to organizational performance, having resource exchange and
combination as a mediator. Specifically, number of intra-organizational ties, trust and tie strength
strengthen organizational performance by promoting the development of resource exchange and
combination. In addition, resource exchange and combination affects growth and innovation
performance, thus, positively influence organizational performance. These findings intensively
drive firms to strongly concentrate on improving resource exchange and combination so as to
facilitate the organizational performance. Concurrently, this study provides an opportunity to
conduct further research of social capital with various factors in particular industries.
