Social enterprise model in online education to upgrade knowledge for Vietnamese youth
Abstract
The purpose of this research is to build a social enterprise model in online education to upgrade knowledge for Vietnamese youth. To accomplish this, the researcher posted three research questions.
The literature review about the social enterprises was conducted in term of its definition, models, and situation in Vietnam. The Business Model Canvas with its nine elements was thoroughly reviewed and applied as the conceptual framework for this
study.
Applying the qualitative approach, the secondary data analysis of online education models and situation worldwide and in Vietnam is the method used to propose
a business model. Then three focus groups of potential customers of the proposed model and seven interviews with experts were carried out to assess and give recommendation in
the purpose of improving the proposed model.
The proposed model is a hybrid between Coursera and Udemy that cooperates with universities and professors to offer university level online courses with calendar based schedule in which students pay tuition fee. The result suggested that this model received positive assessment from potential customers and experts with suggestions to improve its four elements in BMC, which are customer segments, value proposition, key partners, and revenue stream.
Although posing several limitations, this study helps the researcher to improve not only her knowledge and understanding in the field but also ability to conduct qualitative research. It also proposes a business model that can be employed or referred
by social entrepreneurs as well as insight into the customers and experts‟ perspectives
toward online education.
