Using Dr. Thanh herbal tea debris for cultivation of Pleurotus pulmonarius

Abstract

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using Dr. Thanh herbal tea debris for Pleurotus pulmonarius cultivation. P. pulmonarius was cultured in Dr. Thanh herbal tea debris which was mixed with corn bran, and lime (CaCO3) in different manners and productivity and quality of the mushroom were analyzed. The obtained results showed that Dr. Thanh herbal tea debris supplemented with 2% corn bran with final moisture content of 70% were optimal for the mushroom production. Under these conditions, total yield of the product was 512 ± 2.8 g/kg and Bio-Efficiency (BE) was 51.2%. These values are comparable with conventional substrate culture (sawdust) of which total yield and BE were 541 ± 2.94 and 54.1, respectively. Mushroom quality analysis revealed that P. pulmonarius grown on Dr. Thanh debris had significant higher amounts of total proteins (31.2 g/100g) and total amino acid (35.9 mg/100g) compared with that from sawdust culture of which total protein and amino acid were 22.45 and 20.0 mg/100 g, respectively. Especially, the amounts of seven essential amino acids, except for Methionine were also significantly higher than those of sawdust was cultured, These findings show that Dr. Thanh tea debris is a good substrate for high quality P. pulmonarius production.
