In this study, we research the cytotoxicity and chondrogenic activity of five extracts (crude, n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol extract) from Caryota mitis L. skin fruits on young human chondrocyte. The data showed that all extracts were not cytotoxicity and stimulated the growth of chondrocyte at 1 μg/ml; 0.1 μg/ml; 0.01 μg/ml concentrations. In addition, in vitro environment after 3 weeks, the agglomerated chondrocytes were observed in all extracts which suggested that M1, M2, M3, M4, M5 can be used to induce the cartilage formation of chondrocyte. Furthermore, three compounds including 1-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(2S,3S,4R,6Z)-2-N-(2’-hydroxydecanoyl)heneicosasphinga-6-ene, isoquercitrin and rutin were isolated from methanol extract from skin fruits of Caryota mitis L. by silica gel column chromatography . Their structures were elucidated by analysis of NMR spectral data (1H, 13C, HSQC, HMBC and DEPT) in comparison with the published reports.
