Study on biochemical activities of components from codonopsis Javanica cultivated in Lam Dong Province
Abstract
Codonopsis javanica (Blume) Hook.f. (known in Vietnam as “Đảng Sâm”) is one of
the most precious medicinal plants of Vietnam and have been in the Red Book of
Vietnam since 2007. Dried and torrefied Codonopsis javanica (Blume.) roots are
used to as medicines. However, a lack of research on the properties of this material
medicine has been consistent for years up to this day.
Codonopsis javanica (Blume.) root powder is extracted by the reflux extraction
method using Ethanol 98% for total extract. This total extract was then extracted by
liquid-liquid partition to obtain 4 fractions: diethyl ether, ethyl acetate, n-BuOH and
water. Afterwards, the extracts are tested on their antioxidant properties using the
scavenging activity on DPPH free radicals method. Next, column chromatography is
used to purify individual chemical compounds from mixtures of compounds, checked
by TLC, and indentify the structure of the purified chemical compounds by UV
spectrum and NMR.
The antioxidant responds of fraction was EtOAc (IC50 = 280.46 μg/ml) is highest.
From EtOAc fraction, a highly - purified chemical compound is extracted using
column chromatography technique, and is structurally indentified as Lobetyolin
From n-buOH fraction, column and preparative thin – layer chromatography are
utilized to isolate a chemical compound with a high level of purification, and
structurally identify the compound as 5 – hydroxymethylfurfural.
