Evaluation of possibility to remove Dimethyl Sulfide (DMS) in biofilter using sulfur oxidizing bacteria (SOB)
Abstract
This study focused on applying 5 strains of sulfur oxidizing bacteria (SOB) in biofiltration using perlite as carrying material to remove dimethyl sulfide(DMS). There were three different treatments in this research. The experiments were designed that 5 strains of SOB were immobilized on perlite for 2 treatments and without perlite for 1 treatment, then the dimethyl sulfide oxidizing ability were evaluated after 3 days. H2 strain - Ochrobactrumintermedium had significant ability for DMS removal with high efficiency from 90% to 100% in all treatments after 3 days.In the first day, the rate of DMS removal by all strains with the presence of perlite was faster than treatment without this substrate.Based on BLAST analysis result of the partial 16S rRNA gene sequence, 4 SOB strains H1, H2, H3 and H5 which had high efficiency in DMS removal were identified as Bordetellatrematum, Ochrobactrumintermedium, Microbacteriumhominis, and Stenotrophomonasacidaminiphila, respectively.
