dc.description.abstract | Inland capture fisheries plays an important role for the rural poor households in the
Mekong River delta (MKD). However, the inland capture fisheries production in the MKD
tedns to decrease in recent years. The previous studies about inland capture fisheries in
the MKD Mekong delta is obsolete and unspecific, this research assess the current
status of fishing practices in order to serve the other related studies after, by making
the field survey ò 112 fishing households in three typical zones of the MKD. The result
shows that there is a relationship between fishing habitats and the fishing gears, fishing
season base on the water level, and local geographic conditions. The total catches and
numbers of species in full-time fishing households are more than part-time households
are. The number of part-time fishing households reduces due to the degration of inland
fisheries resources. Almost fishers use only one fishing gear, there is a small part uses
more than one fishing gear in both full-time and part-time fishing households. The fish
catches changes among the habitats through fishing season; in wet season, the fishers
catch more fish in rice-fields, irrigation canals, and small rivers then replaced by main
rivers in dry season. Beside fish, OAA also contributes a significant amount in inland
fisheries. However, capture activities still are small-scale forms with single operations.
Therefore, to gain an effective fishery management, we should complete regulations of
input and output controls besides the support solution in a synchronous manner.
