Application potential of microbial fuel indoor acquaculture recirculating system.
Abstract
Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) have become very popular and received a lot of attention in
different scientific and engineering fields because of its potential application. MFC are widely
research in batch mode or continuously system which applies different inoculums for
wastewater treatment in industrial company. In this study, MFC are used to assess the
wastewater treatment ability for recirculating aquaculture system and the ability to generate
electricity with pure bacteria strains and mixed culture. Two types of inoculums were used,
pure culture included two bacteria strains (Pseudomonas Putida, Acinetobacter baumanii)
and sludge of Brewery Company as mixed culture which consisted of diverse bacteria. In
mixed culture treatment, up to 1.132 V voltage output corresponding to 0.930 mA of
current was generated. COD removal was up to 37.69% and 49.37% in mixed culture and
pure culture treatment, respectively. The MFCs were capable to maintained pH from 6.5 to
7.5 and turbidity from 5.25 to 13.29 in order to reach from 71.7% to 100% survival rate of
fish. The MFCs were able to apply in indoor aquaculture-recirculating system for generating
electricity and treat wastewater; therefore, survival rate of fish was maintained and growth
rate was enhanced.
