Astaxanthin is belonged to family of carotenoid, class of xanthophyll which appeared as red-orange color. It is well known as a powerful antioxidant, with valuable biological activity. This study was carried out the effect of molasses and Hansen medium to the growth and the production of biomass and astaxanthin from Rhodosporidum sp., simultaneously developed optimal condition to optimize quantitative and qualitative of the products. The result has exposed that cultured in Hansen medium required longer period of inoculation in comparison with molasses medium, 98 hours and 77 hours before decline, respectively. During biomass collection and extraction process, the efficiency of obtained products was corresponded to the length of the culture period. However, astaxanthin accumulation was not correlated with the yield of biomass. Besides, optimal condition was established by set Hansen medium as standard and reference. The optimal condition was composed of sucrose (49.36g/l), Peptone Korea (24g/l), MgSO4 (3.75g/l), KH2PO4 (3.52 g/l), took 120 hours of inoculation. It achieved significant higher yield than the standard, 12.517 g/l of biomass, 1.90 fold of astaxanthin content and 2.284 μg/l of astaxanthin yield. These results were also comparable to the molasses medium, it has showed that the productivity after optimization has been increased to 45%, approximately. Thus, optimal condition has served its target to critically induce the production from Rhodosporidium sp.en_US
