Study on the chemical constituents and bioactivities of zingiber zerumbet (Ngai mat troi)
Abstract
Zingiber Zerumbet is a traditional medicinal plant not only well-known in Vietnam but also in Asian countries and it has been demonstrated to have anti-inflammatory effect, inhibiting cancerous diseases. This project aimed to study the essential oil, phytochemical constituents and biological activities of Zingiber Zerumbet from An Giang province. The essential oil of Z. Zerumbet was isolated by hidro-distillation method and analyzed by GC-MS. 15 constituents were identified and zerumbone (45%) was found to be the major component. One phytochemical compound was isolated and identified as 4″-o-acetylafzelin by MS. The extracts, fractions and compound were evaluated antioxidant activity by DPPH free radical method. The Fr02 and residue exhibited the highest capacity among all samples. Antimicrobial activity also had been tested with the Z.Zerumbet extracts, the Gram positive bacteria were resisted by these extracts while the Gram negative bacteria were not. In short, Zingiber Zerumbet has potential in drugs development and can be investigated for further pharmaceutical aspects.
Key words: Zingiber Zerumbet, essential oil, zerumbone, DPPH free radical method, antioxidant, antimicrobial.
