Chromolaena odorata is medicinal plant used as treatment for wound healing, skin infection, blood coagulating, antibacterial, anti-inflammation and analgesia. In this project, crude extract, n-hexane extract, ethyl acetate extract and methanol extract of leaves of the plant C. odorata (in south Vietnam) was investigated for antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. In antioxidant test, four extracts were performed by the thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS) method on brain mice. The result showed that ethyl acetate extract had high efficiency with IC50 value of 20.71 ug/ml. To evaluate the antimicrobial activity, four extracts were tested by disk diffusion method against four bacterial strains associated with human skin infections. The ethyl acetate extract showed the greatest inhibitory activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 (12.2±1.0mm), Bacillus cereus ATCC 11778 (10.5±0.6mm), Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 (10.3±0.5mm), Escherichia coli ATCC 8739 (12.6±0.9mm) at concentration of 20mg/mL. In brief, C. odorata leaf extracts, especially ethyl acetate extract, might have potential therapeutic effect and should be considered to develop medical products.
