Up to 5% of wastewater generated worldwide is highly saline effluents-NaCl at high concentration. Microbial fuel cell (MFC) which using microorganism to convert chemical to electrical energy, was considered as a promising wastewater treatment. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of chloride inform of NaCl at different concentration (0g, 5g, 10g,20g/L) on the performance of MFC regarding its electrical generation, wastewater treatment efficiency and microbial organism in the anode of MFCs. The increasing of NaCl concentration leads to the decrease of voltage output (maximum voltage at 0.32V, 0.21V, 0.12V, 0.11V respectively) while the electric current does not correspond to NaCl concentration. COD removal efficiency between control and treatments are insignificantly different (p>0.05) and reach 65.9-78.7%. Acidovorax spp was isolated from treatment without NaCl while Pseudomonas citronellolis was collected from treatments containing 10g and 20g NaCl/L. Pseudomonas citronellolis can be used as a potential type of inoculum of MFC for treating highly saline wastewater based on its electrical generation ability (0.52V) when rechecking this pure strain with mini MFC.
