Cellulose extraction from coconut husk.
Abstract
Coir or coconut fiber is a natural fiber extracted from the husk of the coconut which had been used as a starting material for the isolation of cellulose. Pre-treated coir was pulped by sodium hydroxide, following by acid hydrolysis in the combination of sonication/microwave and bleached by sodium hypochlorite to isolate cellulose. The obtained celluloses were characterized by FTIR then measured the efficiency of isolation. The results show that cellulose could be produced effectively from coconut husk with low amount and concentration of chemicals
