Application Of Microbial Fuel Cells (Mfcs) In Aquarium Recirculating Systems
Abstract
In this study, a single compartment MFC membraneless was used to test the MFC
application in the aquarium recirculation system, by eliminating the use of
membrane, it will reduce costs and increase the scope of application for this
system, so that it can be used in the recycling of goldfish (Carassius auratus)
wastewater. The application of MFC to the treatment of aquarium wastewater in
this study was determined on two factors, firstly the use of MFC recycle
wastewater in goldfish culture (treatment 1) and the second is the changing of
water retention time affect to the water output condition of MFC (treatment 2 ).
After the experiment, the results showed the positive in treatment 1, the generated
voltage of MFC was increased and maintained at a fixed level (580-800mv), the
water source was also treated quite well when the parameters such as ammonia <
0.01mg/L, Nitrite <0.1mg/L, Nitrate <1mg/L, COD treatment efficiency was about
20%.In experiment 2, the environment parameters also giving good results,
maximum ammonia level 0.0131mg/L, Nitrite 0.225mg/L, Nitrate 1.435mg/L,
COD treatment efficiency was increased to 40%, proving that by reduce that water
retention time, it helps the MFC become more stable but less control on the
treatment of wastewater. Finally, the application of MFC to the treatment of
aquarium wastewater is feasible and can be further explored later on,
demonstrating the diversity of MFC when it can be applied not only at larger scale,
but also applicable to smaller, more common scales.
