Estimation Of Fruits Volume And Mass Using A Single Top-View Image: A Case Study Of Kiwifruits And Sapodilla Fruits
Abstract
Image processing technology is considered one of the very useful new technologies in
the food industry. In particular, the image processing method is effectively applied in
the process of food quality inspection and classification based on shape and size
parameters. At the same time, the development potential of this technology is huge so
that researchers have applied this technology to fruit production lines with the purpose
to improve the time and efficiency of the process. This report aims to accomplish three
main objectives. First, this paper proposes a computer vision system capable of
estimating the volume and weight of fruits based on size parameters such as length and
width of the fruits. Second, the system is designed to use only one camera to capture a
top-view image, which gives this system the advantage of low cost when compare to
systems using multiple cameras or three-dimensional (3D) cameras. Finally, this article
provides a solution which is low cost, short processing time and high accuracy in the
food inspection process. In this article, our approach was applied to a case study of egg
shaped fruits such as kiwi and sapodilla.
