dc.description.abstract | Background: In recent times, there has been a significant emphasis on exploring natural product-based compounds as potential options for antidiabetic drug development. Ensete glaucum seeds has been used as a medical herb by Vietnamese people for centuries, but not yet to have any clear proof towards the plant. Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the hypoglycemic and protective effect of E. glaucum seed extract in streptozotocin-induced hyperglycemic mice. Methods: Male Swiss albino mice were administered with single dose of 170 mg/kg streptozotocin to create a hyperglycemia mouse model. STZ was used due to its long half-life and its ability to create hyperglycemia mice model with fast pace. Fasting plasma glucose and insulin will be recorded after 7 days of the experiment with 25 and 50 mg/kg of the extract. Oral glucose tolerant test (OGTT) was also applied to this model and used to calculate the glucose AUC. Mice were then got euthanized for histopathological analysis of the amount and size of pancreatic islets. Results: E. glaucum seed extract at the dose of 25 and 50 mg/kg had shown the hypoglycemic effect through the significantly lower effect of plasma glucose and the drastic increase of plasma insulin compare with hyperglycemic mice receive no treatments at all. Glucose and AUC in OGTT returned as the mice with extract-treating were able to process D-glucose as same as normal mice or hyperglycemic mice with Glibenclamide 5 mg/kg. Both of the doses had also shown the effect of protective where the more and larger of β-cell pancreatic islets regenerated. Conclusion: E. glaucum seed extract showed side of hypoglycemic effect and protective effects on hyperglycemic mice. Further research is needed to carry out for chemical properties on E. glaucum seeds to determine the valuable contain. | en_US |
