Evaluating The Ameliorative Role Of Polyscias Fruticosa Leaf Extract- Supplemented Diets In Aluminum Chloride Induced Model Of Neurotoxicity In Drosophila Melanogaster
Abstract
The Vietnamese employ Polycias fruticosa leaves with antioxidant properties to aid in
the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's. The study is aimed to
evaluate the potent antioxidant activity of P. fruticosa leaf extract for neurological
treatment in in-vivo conditions. The effect of consumption of P. fruticosa leaf extract
was justified using on AlCl3-induced model of neurotoxicity Drosophila melanogaster
flies with survival assay, climbing assay, olfactory learning assay, and
malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) level as biomarkers. D. melanogaster
was exposed to a concentration of 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 mg/mL of the leaf extract. I t was
suggested under toxic conditions, the leaf extract can increase longevity for flies as
well as improve the flies' behavior and biochemical parameters. For all tests, 1.0
mg/mL had the tendency to express the best when improving the ability of movement
and remember as well as play an important role in decreasing the MDA level and
increasing GSH level in flies’ homogenates. The obtained results pointed to the
potential of P. fruticosa extract used for prevention and possible treatment caused by
aluminum chloride, but it still needs further investigation.
