A flexible workforce scheduling problem: A case of Big C. Dong Nai
Abstract
Workforce scheduling is defined as trying to assign the right number of
employees to each of the planning periods of work time in the workplace. The purpose of this
study is to solve the lack of optimization workforce scheduling problem at Big C Dong Nai
supermarket due to the Covid-19 pandemic occurrence. The objective function is minimizing
the total labor cost in peak periods by proposing a dynamic workforce scheduling. The dynamic
workforce scheduling both offers employees pleasant schedules and ensures high customer
satisfaction. The solution approaches include the mixed-integer linear programming (MILP)
model. This is solved by IBM ILOG CPLEX Optimization Studio for the small datasets to find
out the optimal solution. And the post-processing algorithm is written in visual basic for
applications (VBA) for assigning days off schedule.
